Young Trades Hornets Red for Bearcats Green
Chillicothe’s three-time all state football player Bryce Young has
signed a letter of intent to play college football for the Division II
National champion Northwest Missouri State University Bearcats. Young
said Missouri Western and a walk-on opportunity at University of
Missouri were other top choices. He said knowing previous Hornets such as Josh
Gannan and Brett Grozinger had successful football careers at
Northwest helped in his decision.
Young was an All State First Team Defensive back this
year, an All State First Team Running Back his Junior year and was a
Coaches Association Third Team All State selection at Defensive Back
his sophomore year. Young holds several Chillicothe football records.
Boys Basketball
The Chillicothe Hornets saw
their modest three game winning streak end with a 70-56 loss to St
Joseph Benton at Chillicothe. It was just the fourth win of the year
for Benton, but three have come against Chillicothe. Just three days
earlier, Benton had managed just 18 points against Cameron.
The Hornets led 20-15 at the end of the first quarter and
increased that to a ten point lead early in the second, but Benton
started hitting shots and a half court shot at the halftime buzzer
tied the score. Chillicothe would enjoy just one more tied score early
in the third quarter before falling behind by double figures much of
the third and fourth quarters.
Chillicothe was led by Bryce Young
with 30 points and Alex Thompson with 15 points, but after that the
scoring drops off to Blake Stephens with 4, Brett Stephens and Jacob
McKiddy with 3 each, Spencer Hart with 1 and playing time for Zach
Douglas, Nick Voorhies, Tyler Midgyett, Darien Lame, Austin Busse and
Jake Mathew.
With the 70-56 loss, Chillicothe
falls to 6-11 and 1-2 in MEC play while Benton improves to 4-16 overall
and 1-1 in MEC play.
The Chillicothe Junior Varsity nailed
key free throws in the final 18 seconds to beat Benton 54-50. Connor
Dixon had 10 points, Nick Voorhies with 9, Darien Lame with 8, Trevor
Reger and Austin Busse with 7, Tyler Midgyett with 6, Phil Pagliai with
3 and Jake Mathew and Broc Graves with 2 each.

who returns several starters from last year's 8-2 team, Maryville, who
moves up to Class three after winning the Class 2 Show Me Bowl in 2009
